I had rear end at a set of lights, was sat there only car with brake lights on for at least a minute, then a woman in a new (at the time) merc a class hit the back of me (realy don't know how she managed not to see the red light or the brake lights).
I'd had a bad day at work so realy wound up at that point, got out to find her extremely apologetic and saying she would give me insurance details or pay for any damage if needs be. Still not impressed i went to the back of the car to find she had cracked my number plate and nothing else! Turned to her car to find my exhaust had smashed her fog light and cracked her bumper!
As she was so apologetic and her car came out a lot worse off than mine i said forget about the number plate and just get your own car sorted as that will cost enough for the mistake.
She was still apologetic and thankful, i was still annoyed but although she'd have to pay out of her own pocket to fix her car it would probably be better as both of our premiums would of went up over a little bump, not having mine going up because of a £10 number plate just wouldn't be right, and like you say Piggy i don't see how that would be justifiably for my insurence to rise (probably another £100-200 a year!).
Stay away from it if it's not too bad and you can either sort it yourself or pay someone else to sort cheap then do it that way and send the old chap the bill.
