Daze's Ph1.5 (Ph2 converted) DTurbo

Quite a busy weekend! 

Drove 2 hours to grab some parts off of a Ph1 D Turbo, 4 hour round trip, car was spot on. Really enjoy driving it long distance! 


When I got back, thought I'd attempt swapping steering column. Mine had a bit of play near the steering wheel and I've read that there is a nylon bush inside the column itself, non-serviceable, so its an entire column change required. Its actually really easy to swap columns

Removed the drivers seat (so its easier to lay down), remove all plastic covers, etc. Then remove these x2 13mm nuts near steering wheel


Then further down, resting my head on the pedals, x2 13mm nuts, followed by 13mm pinch bolt


For ease, I removed this panel (with the plug on), and this flexi hose for a little more space


Then it was looking like this


Unplugged the stalks, and it came straight out. Fitted the new one in reverse order, everything is perfect! Tightened her up, no more play, feels so so much better to drive!

...

Then, onto yesterday, did most of the Phase 1 conversion. This is the little lot I grabbed




Front bumper removal was a right pain, didn't really know how or what I was doing in fairness, but its done now. x2 on each side 10mm nuts facing forward is all that holds it. Removal of wheels & arch liners is required.

Slam panel is held with x2 nuts top corners, and x2 13mm's in a similar place to front bumper nuts, then it comes off completely


Didn't really take too many photos, but fitted Ph1 slam panel back on, front bumper, etc. I didn't bother (or have time) to fit new front wings, but I'll do that at some point.

Onto soldering for headlights, this is the Ph2 headlight plug with wires attached testing live's for dip/main/sidelights


10 mins later, plug chopped off & all figured out & all soldered onto Ph1 loom. Then wrapped in split conduit trunking


Annnd, done!


Also swapped the rear bumper too, but didn't have time to do rear lights


Pretty happy! Just need to get it sprayed now. Whilst I'm there, to sort the car park dings down the side, especially on passenger side of the car.

A few things that I noticed while doing this Ph1 swap. Everywhere I read said its a simple bolt-off/bolt-on job, but its not quite

1, Bonnet catch is different, I didn't have the Ph1 bonnet catch, but I've modified Ph2 to suit
2, Bonnet catch cable mounting bracket. It needs to be secured to stop it sliding, not sure what the factory method is?
3, Header tank bracket doesn't fit. Now I know Ph1's don't actually have separate header tanks, so cable ties for now
4, Under bonnet fabric/sound proofing material doesn't seem to fit or line up. Can probably modify to suit though
5, Bonnet gas struts don't fit. Ph1 uses manual lever, so will eventually modify/weld to fit gas struts
6, Drivers side headlight fouls on an air-con component (not sure what). Had to very slightly bend out the way

A lot of messing around on a few of these things, its a lot of work to do in 1 day to be honest! But I'm much happier now its Ph1 front! Next on the list will be rear lights (which I already have), perhaps next weekend
