Thinking of doing the unthinkable. Suggestions?

So it's been 3 good years with the 306, not fault free.... new rear axle, new heater matrix, 4 new rear calipers and a few little odds and sods. But engine wise a 100% reliable 3 years.
Anyway she's decided we need something newer and my only input is bigger and higher towing weight. Limit is roughly £2000 possibly raising to £2500 if we don't keep the pug.
Shortlist so far is:

Land Rover Freelander preferably 03>
Land Rover Discovery Series 2
Vauxhall Frontera mk2 Olympus spec only
Mitsubishi Shogun preferably 00>

So any suggestions other than above or what to look out for on them? I'm a diesel man myself so must be diesel, 7seaters are a desirable plus but not essential and prefer 5 door LWB models if available. Basically something's bigger family-wise but also something I can play with, mod, and maybe take on a few off road courses of a weekend.
