Bang for buck I'd recommend a ZR 160, or a 206 180. They are not particularly in demand and so sell for very cheap.

its getting his hands on a decent posh rover and support pebbles, plus some bits are not as easy to get hold of now, like they were a couple of years ago. Most may have been bought up for racing in the mgcc
but at least most rovers now wont be on their original headgaskets.
