Seems within budget and can get higher spec models for around the same money. probably get a 5 yr old one for the higher end of your budget and they are a nice / decent place to be

1.4t 140bhp isn't bad and would probably be had for £5.5k.
Boggo spec would be do-able for £4500.
I was looking at these earlier today. What's the 1.4 Turbo engine like? I found a 61 plate for £6k with 40k on the clock at a local dealer. Really like the look of the Astra J.

Even though a BMW would be an upgrade, pitching this missus would be difficult. I'd just get so we are spending 4k on a car that's the same age?
