Wait until someone is selling one with a detailed project thread that they have looked after and done major work and servicing to. That way, you'll be buying something with a known past with minimal chance of being bullshitted.
Certainly in terms of economical motoring one of the diesel 306s that hasn't been played with too much and has been looked after should be a good bet, with plenty of knowledge on here to keep you motoring. I believe sometimes insurance on them can be surprisingly high but not everyone seems to have experienced this.
However, to fully answer your thread title, the best 306 is a gti-6.
