Connecting the remote to the switch live shouldn't "kill the car", something must be wrong. What do you mean? It doesn't have to be the one for the unit, any switch live manly enough will be fine. The one for the HU should be fine, so I'd advise to stop trying to get around it, find out what was wrong and do it properly.
