You don't need a special tool, spanner will be fine for removing the plug.
You can change the gearbox oil without removing the wheel-arch etc. and the breather/level plug on the side pokes out into the wheel area on the side of the box.
I'd never done it before and after reading the FAQ it only took a few minutes if you don't count the time I sat around drinking tea and letting it drain.
