Maf unplugged

As per title really I was looking around my engine bay as just bought an estate hdi and noticed that the maf was unplugged, any reason why someone may of unplugged it and left it as it looks like it's been unplugged for a while looking at how dirty the plug was??
Ran fine with it unplugged but I have plugged it back in and seems ok as well (strange  )
