Well according to this thread on the Mitsubishi forum copper gaskets melt and rust:

So now I have 3 options:

Genuine gaskets

Make my own from gasket sheet

Firegum

Still interested in what grade of sandpaper I should use because the surfaces do feel a bit too "smooth" for Fire gum.
