Release bearing makes a whirring/rattling noise when it's knackered, usually easily identifiable over the engine noise. Failure can be fairly messy - had one in yesterday that had smashed the plate springs, webbing and a hole in the housing. 
Tbh while it's apart you may as well do the lot, and maybe upgrade now if you've got plans of going stage 2 or higher.
