noise that disappears when clutch in? - rd070707 - 24-07-2013

Hi guys I have started to notice that my hdi is making a weird noise at idle when cold, hard to explain really, like a small rattle / tinkering that completely stops when I put the clutch in. it also seems to get slot quieter when the car heats up, even when cold though its not that loud hence why I have only noticed now.

Any ideas?

Clutch will still operate fine with a shot release bearing.. You juat have to put up with the god awful noise. M

Will failure cause any damage? atm the noise is barely noticeable

Either release bearing, or gearbox input shaft bearing, gti6 boxs seem to ra*e input shaft bearings for some reason. not that that applies to you

Got the same noise on my dt with hdi box. Mines got brand new clutch/bearing so my money is on input shaft bearing. Like you say nice and quiet with clutch pressed

Is the input shaft bearing easy changed? Or should I just batter on and are of it gets worse. A stage one will be going on soon then probably stage 2

My hdi box makes a whine which disappears when the clutch is pressed had the clutch and release bearing changed all the oil seals have been changed with new oil, it went to a gearbox specialist that stripped it down and couldnt find any damage he said it must be the age of the box Confused

Release bearing makes a whirring/rattling noise when it's knackered, usually easily identifiable over the engine noise. Failure can be fairly messy - had one in yesterday that had smashed the plate springs, webbing and a hole in the housing. Confused

Tbh while it's apart you may as well do the lot, and maybe upgrade now if you've got plans of going stage 2 or higher.

well yeah if I were to do the job I may aswell stick in a new clutch while I'm there. Just another job to do now, someone buy my minilites pleeeease lol. But yeah poodle whirring / rattling would describe it best

i had exactly the same problem, was the release bearing, just in time too, the clutch was really starting to play up
