Removing whole track rod?

Right, slight update to this thread. I have managed to get the waterpump pliers on the sphere bit like this:

   

I can grip it okay but the steering rack is twisting slightly as I try to undo the metal bulb end of the track rod. I am very wary of damaging the steering rack you see!
