I remeber doing this with my 1.4 diablo before I did any 'proper' car work myself. Blown HG caused a 2" hole in the bottom rad hose at college.
Was towed home. Then needed it at the garage 2 miles away - they wanted £50 to truck it there!
So we just basically thought f*ck it I'll drive it. Fixed it with a bottle and some tape, filled it up and it started leaking before I left the drive. Pulled over every time it got to the red or the stop light came on - after 4 stops in the first mile of very careful driving I'd used all the water and it was coming out as quick as I filled it up. 
So filled it up one last time and ragged the f*ck out of it the next mile to the garage with half the dash lights on.
