10w40 is whats recommended.
the first bit is the thickness when cold and the 2nd bit is the thickness when hot. so a 5w40 the engine would find it easier to pump round on a cold morning and a 10w50 (that certain people use in big power XUDs) will be thicker when it gets really hot as they believe that localised thining of the oil is to blame for the engines spitting rods.
personally on the XUD id stick to 10w40
