I'm craving boost like a crack head that hasn't had their feed, but my car is on 172k and worried as soon as it comes on boost the rods will make a run for it.
Wise move fitting my Td04 or stick with standard turbo?

Depends what sort of life the engine has had during those 172k miles. If Its always had regular oil changes, been warmed up and cooled down before and after any enthusiastic driving, then I dont see any reason why It would suddenly fail, just ease up the boost gently, give the engine chance to get run in running higher boost so you can find Any weakness before its too late. The xud is pretty solid if Its been looked after

Either, its your boost that will make or break your car tbh, that and your fuel timing. Never had any issues with failure due to rpm, although I'm sure some will disagree.

Give it a decent service, break her in gently, then crack on. Either way your gunna be running an old diesel engine at nearly double stock power, expect the worst but have fun doing it.

Think many people running bigger turbo's and boost are on a fairly high mileage engine.
I'm on 166k running T25, prior to that had T2 at around 26PSI for about year and a half.
Just crack on with it and be sensible with your foot.

5w40 is better but 10w40 if you cant afford. Gulf is all good stuff!

Im not too keen on using 5w40 in a diesel, i think thicker stuff is better for it, either 10w40 or 15w40. I use 15w40 miller race oil, never let me down yet

Mobil 1 super 2000 10w40 turbo diesel is what i use in my daily, and run 15w40 miller race oil in my 306 but that tends to be a bit pricey for everyday road car use

5w40 just gives better protection from cold, they're both 40's so it makes no difference when warm.

Yeah, warmimg the engine up before driving it hard is the key to longevity tbh, andl et it cool down before switching it off if your running big boost as it will be getting pretty hot, whatever oil you decide to go with, just keep the changes reguler and it should be alright

10w40 is whats recommended.
the first bit is the thickness when cold and the 2nd bit is the thickness when hot. so a 5w40 the engine would find it easier to pump round on a cold morning and a 10w50 (that certain people use in big power XUDs) will be thicker when it gets really hot as they believe that localised thining of the oil is to blame for the engines spitting rods.
personally on the XUD id stick to 10w40

Ive always ran 5w40 fully synthetic as advised by Opie Oils and never had a problem, ive found it a lot smoother than 10w40 semi synthetic, IMO id rather have fully synthetic flying through a upgraded turbo.
Whack the boost up whether you do it gradually or at once if its gona go it will go

172k is that it? I have managed to rack up 210k miles. For the last 6 months I have been driving with 22psi and some more fuel and it has never had a problem. Just look after it buddy!

I wouldn't be using 15w/40 in any "High Performance" diesel engine... IMHO you want a good 10w/40 - any more and you're risking not having good enough flow at low temperatures... 15w is bloody thick when cold...
Also if you're actually tuning your car, IMHO you shouldn't be using anything else than a full ester synthetic... Ignore "Fully Synthetic" - it means naff all, it can nigh on be a Semi-Synthetic as most are from mineral base stocks... You need a Full Ester Synthetic... Both Me, Darren and a few others have been using Gulf Competition 10W/40, it's not scary expensive, but it's damned good stuff... Just don't go using Titan Pro-S by Fuchs/Silkolene - it seems to make Vacuum pumps leak like a sieve, 3 of us used it and within a month had uncontrollable oil leaks from the vac pump...

I have had trouble choosing oil for the car, every one opinions, well there not wrong, but its hard to justify spending money on oil that one person says is good. I'll take your advice mate ^^ Seems a few others swear by it.
