Do these engines have a similar set up to the 1.6 stepper motor for the idle speed? Cos until I cleaned the motor on mine, it had very similar symptoms, also cut out a few times.
Just blasted it out with carb cleaner, and soaked the air filter in redex then took it for a thrash
Seemed to fix it, never had the same issue again!
