few other things ( some asbestos doesn't have to be disturbed to be dangerous i.e. loose blue asbestos insulation is 100% loose asbetos and never stops releasing fibres in to the air . )
even if you get a barb in your lungs there is nothing to say you WILL die of it..at the end of the day it is down to luck, it is only dangerous if it flares up in your lungs and that is when you can get mesothelioma and pleural thickening of the lungs or some of the other nasty shit you can get from the stuff which can take between 15-60 years to show itself.
oh and don't soak it in water as if you get any dust around it will turn to a paste which is hard to pick up and if you don't pick it all up then it will dry out and become airborne therefore being no safer than not wetting it in the first place...best way is a light mist spray.
And 306 carter..... It is not true that you have to inhale serious amounts of the stuff to get the disease all it takes is one fibre to flare up in your lungs and hey ho presto you have asbestosis. but if your lucky you could work with it for years and never be ill.
nothing with asbestos has been blown out of preportion it is dangerous and the levels of people dying from an asbestos related diseases is still going up and up every year in some countries it is not banned and is still being mined from the ground ( asbestos is a natural material contrary to popular beleif that it is a man made product) and the reason more and more people are dying from asbestosis is because more and more people are coming into contact with it because they don't know it's there or dont know how to handle it safely or even are exposed to it by others who are careless with it. If you work with asbestos and don't wear ppe then you are endangering so many people...if you were in a work van then you and your van and tools will be contaminated and then so will your house be if you went home and so will anyone and anything else you come into contact with when you got home, asbestos dust is so small that it cannot be seen by the naked eye ( around 8 microns ) which seen in comparison to a human hair is very surprising.
