MG ZR: Cams & Maps
Thanks James Smile Now im starting to understand its limits better its making me more excited to get back at it
Looking at semi's for the 16s ive been hoarding due to budget will either be going ns2r or 595RSR

Last weekend it visited 3 sisters circuit where it did fairly well. However there's more in it mainly due to driver skill
Tried trail braking in a previous session but it felt more of a hindrance than a benefit, just need to keep trying i guess.

Friends ZS, skip to 10:50 for him spinning out. Only his 3rd time on track and was getting a little cocky lol

Not a major update: Still working on the mapping to see if i can smooth the idle down as it's a bit lumpy so put it back to stock to work from there

Also got a bit of a tutorial from an old garage friend at 3 sisters yesterday. Previous best lap was about 54 seconds (with map) now it's 51-52 ish (stock ecu). He took me out in his puma afterwards to show me what he was trying to explain in the car, very helpful. Despite his puma only being 120hp he was doing 47 second laps so going to see if i can use the magical oversteer for some sub 50 laps in the future

Minor update:

Been playing with the mapping more to try and smooth out the idle due to the camshaft changes. And got the janspeed manifold and sports cat fitted so hopefully a couple more ponies in it.

Will hopefully be getting it rolled soon to get the figures and airfuel ratios so can add some more fuel to compensate for the cams

Update:
So as I mentioned to a couple of people at the xmas meet i had this rolled a little while ago to test out the mapping. Sadly the operator got the rpm scale wrong so the results are a bit fudged hence my reservations of putting it up but hey ho i'll do it anyway

Red is oem map, blue is my prototype if you will. Can see a few hp gain low down with about 7-10 after vvc kicks in yo

Some notes:
This is at the wheels power
Clutch power can be ignored since  they attempted it was wrong
Car is running leaner than ideal
Car does not rev to 8k rpm

Still a nice gain none the less
Future plan is to keep working on it but now I've got my eyes set on having the head ported out since seeing some comparison graphs which should a very nice increase when rovers poor casting is sorted out. Also need to richen up for a possible extra couple of ponies

Also another note, this was with stock exhaist manifold. Now I have a aftermarket there should be an even better gain

Drove this at the christmas meet. I really cant makeup my mind how it compares to the 306 1.8. The whole car feels solid but becomes almost harsh over bumps so im not sure what can be done suspension wise. It feels pretty planted though. There is definitely something weird going on when letting off from WOT the engine noise is almost doubled before it drops a few thousand rpm.

In all... i cant really see why you like it but each to their own! D: xxx

I'll give you that the front springs are a bit harsh for road use
got to feel faster than the 1.8 though? as wasnt yours 120 at the fly?

Yeah that grinding noise is annoying, no idea what it is as it sounds to be coming from behind the pedal area.

Shame it's quite pricey though

harshness is a common comment from Gaz stuff, something I've never had with Bilstein.

harshness doesnt come from the spring rate, it comes from the poor control of said spring rate by the damper.

If you were going to go down that route, you'd no doubt get much better results from someone with a proven record who specialises in K-series headwork rather than a generic place that has a well-polished sales patter.

From what I've heard Dave Andrews (of DVAPower fame) is one of the better K-series specialists out there, although I've no experience, direct or indirect.

That said, I'd strongly consider whether the head is your current limiting factor power wise and whether that outlay would be better spent elsewhere. What little I know of the K-Series is that the VVC head isn't bad in standard form, and that being the case it's never going to be good VFM getting it ported - particularly when you're not even getting the most from the existing head with the current inlet, exhaust and cams.

Wouldn't a stiff spring make the initial hit very stiff and then the after bounces be dependant on the damper?

Thing is im running out of the bolt on options, cams been done, dowels , exhaust, sports cat, remap. Reading up it seems the VVC head design was not too bad but the casting quality is what really lets it down, especially with the water ways being smaller than designed.
The valves are also smaller than gti6 ones, not to say bigger is better but if i cant get the air in then thats going to limit me. Would be nice to have the head cleaned and refreshed up if nothing else especially since it's a 143 head rather than the improved 160 version

DVA can do it for 600 (unless he prices have changed) but unsure if he's the best to go for since there's this guy who worked for janspeed/rover back in the day and has some flow figures http://www.sabre-heads.co.uk/1.html

In terms of limiting factor im unsure. I'd be getting the injectors refurbed whilst the head was off so as to ensure id be getting enough fuel & air

The clue is in the name, it's a "damper" or "shock absorber". Wink The spring is pretty much there to keep the car off the ground in a non-static manner.

I reckon you should fit a diesel and spend the same £600 on boosting it, give up with this petrol nonsense. Angel

Yeah the damper makes alot of difference to ride quality but the initial thump like hitting a speed bump would be springs if they don't compress and transfer the force into the damper

No to diesel , just wanting to see how far I can take these engine . Plus my commute to work is so short a diesel would never get up to temp in time

no, that's still the damper in my experience, too much friction and initial damping force.

The problem with the suspension on this is it's too "track" oriented.

Yes, the spring is way too hard for road use - but also the dampers are very very stiff and if I remember correctly they aren't adjustable damping?

That dyno plot isn't really worth it's salt mate.

As I said, the RPM scale is wrong on at least 1 of the plots, so you can't compare apples with apples. As soon as the RPM goes wrong, the calculated BHP isn't right any more - so there's no point even looking at it.

Happy to get it on the dyno with you and run back to back?

Fronts arn't, rears are so i've got them set to what gaz recommended for road use. Was watching one of my 3 sisters videos earlier and could hear the it bobbing(?) coming out of one of the corners where it was too stiff

It's wrong on both as in the remap I up'd the rev limiter to a known safe value so they're both out by about 500rpm. The only good thing to take from it though is that it shows a difference between the two maps so at least it's confirmed for me there is a gain being had

I've finished work for the year now so have all of next week off to do stuff Smile

French car show tickets have been bought so need to get a leg on with getting this ready to destroy a certain black rallyee

First up is fixing of one biggest weak points ... no not the headgasket scoff scoff, i mean the driver

Been trying to practice trail braking with mixed results. However on my local track i've gone from 54 second best down to high 50/low 51 which im pretty chuffed with.

Skip to 5:08 for the good bit when you good too far with trail braking

yeh im not sure what youre doing with your hands. its right half the time. try to keep them fixed on the wheel and twist them up instead of letting go and repositioning mid corner. I dont know what the lock to lock is like and its a tight track to be fair but yeh thats something to look at.

I saw your drifting video on fb. Pretty epic!

Nice spot, hand positioning is something I've been called up on a few times and I'm trying my best to get out of the erratic hand habit. The track is tight so it's hard to not go mad with the wheel but sometimes it's embarrassing to look back at

yeh its a go karting track usually isnt it? it may just be that the steering ratio is whack on the rover. Combe in the 306 rarely have to take a second grab at the wheel. Even on the straights you can see one hand is at 2oclock and the other is at 8oclock. Is the steering aligned?

Need to position your hands before the corner.

Then its all in one movement ThumbsUp
