Need to clear this up. Can i tow a car on a trailer?
#1
I have been told that if i passed my test after 1997 i am legal to tow anything upto a combined weight of 3500kg. Now i am after towing a 106 on a trailer so i have worked it out
My car kerb weight 1200kg(wiki)
106 kerb weight 880kg(wiki)
Trailer 600kg

The 106 is completely empty and no fuel so should weight less than the stated kerb weight.

Am i legal to tow without the B+E?

IIRC the weight you're allowed to tow depends also on whether or not the trailer is braked or not?

I don't think the trailer and contents can weigh more than the tow vehicle on our licences.

Quote:If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary Category B licence, you can drive either of the following:

-a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes (3,500 kilograms) maximum gross weight towing a trailer of up to 750 kilograms maximum gross weight (up to 4,250 kilograms in total)

-a trailer over 750 kilograms maximum gross weight as long as it is no more than the unladen or 'kerb' weight of the towing vehicle (up to 3,500 kilograms in total)

For anything heavier you need to take a Category B + E driving test.

So the answer is no..............

If the trailer is light though, say 200kgs and the 106 is say 800kgs then that's less than the kerb weight off the 306 and total is under 3500? So that would be ok?

iv always found it a very gray area as to whats what. i choose to follow what i interpret and so if ever i was to tow a trailer i would never exceed combined trailer and load weight of 750kg. a freind of mine who is only 19 believes he can tow his caravan as its not a "trailer" as far as im aware you have to have a seperate license for a caravan. When i passed my test i asked what im allowed and not allowed and the examiner turned round and said its eaier to just believe you cant as it can be complicated.

How ever i found that if you ring the local traffic unit up there are very helpful they cleared up what you should tow a car with and wether it was leagl or not etc. even said to take note of his name and badge number if there was any problems as he would bare the brunt of any problems.

GROSS weight, so the plated capacity of the trailer.
Custom roll cages/shiny suspension bits/general fabrication work undertaken, PM me.
Top engine mount repair/reinforcement/chocking for cracked chassis and high powered cars, drive in, drive out, 2 hour turnaround.

If you could get the 106 down to 730kg you could tow on an a-frame.

I'm considering doing a deal with the Octavia on a classic Rangie, if I do I'll tow it for you. That's about 2 tonnes pulling less than a tonne and a half, should be fine...

"towing a trailer of up to 750 kilograms maximum gross weight"

Let me see, 200kg + 800kg < 750kg . . . . . . ? No, think you'd struggle to convince even the daftest of policeman there mate... :liar:
