For 4k you could get a nice 05-06 plate 3 series e90 or 5 series e60 with either a 1.8, 2.0TD or whatever floats your boat.
Probably more likely to hold it's value then an Astra or Focus.

Leeds! I've found a 60 plate 1.4turbo at a main dealer local to me. It's a little more than I wanted to spend but I think we'll go take a look tomorrow.
The 1.6 petrols seem to be around the same price too.

Really unimpressive the 1.4T engine in the Vauxhall. Goes ok but horrible to drive.
Had it in a meriva hire car that was otherwise very very good, with loads of space and toys
