Once you've done that you might be able to get away from the mighty 1.8 5 door Tongue

Looks good though and glad to see youre enjoying it.

Didn't these engines go in quite a few cars, elise and mgf to name but two, have you tried any of those forums? Might be looking at specialist track-day and general tuning forums too, as these are quite popular engines to mod, the information must be somewhere if someone's gone as far as to develop a product for this very purpose.

poodle don't for get metros to Tongue
I have pointed him into the directions of the elise, but I don't think them boys really play with the vvc engines, as such.
as most hard core K series nuts go throttle boddies like what SRowell has done.
but laugh is poodle, you get these fancy toys for the engine, ie mike satur toys, but you never really heard of anyone really running his stuff, to even think about taking a gamble on, maybe the mgf boys do, but then again not many of them lads i think really push these engines.
the way the rover info is, and the f*ck on i have had, i have stayed well clear of even touching the engine performance wise!
No way and hell will i f*ck a running engine! bad enough modifying a rover! with the you need this and you have to chop that etc!

Wooooo shiney bits
Brake reaction/tie bar bushes "race" spec apparently these make quite a difference so here's hoping
Also some more cable ties as I started heat wrapping the new manifold since it was flooding the engine bay with heat which can have been doing the alternator any good. Got the 4 branches done and then ran out of ties so just need to finish that off Smile

bits for these are hard to get hold of at the best of times, as most were snapped up by the racers!
cracking upgrades there steve!
have you seen my replacement proper rover?

Well superflex still had these in stock, sadly the didn't have the torque tamer bush (lower engine mounts) as from reading about that seems to be possibly a cause for the juddering when pulling off

I have seen some kind of rover hanging around, tis a shame old red couldn't make the distance but better to start fresh with a better base I guess. Impressed by how quick you've gotten it all swapped over as well. suppose all the rust made it easier to take apart since you wouldnt need tools, just pull on the bit for a second and it'll come right off

yeah another proper one,
the red one wouldn't give its rear subframe and petrol tank easy,
The other proper one didn't, but twigged when it was getting an upgrade, and all the bits just went on!
so we are running a pure 1.1c interior! blue too!

Update:
Well today has been interesting, this afternoon I dropped the front subframe and lower tie bars to replace the rubber bushes with superflex race spec. Very proud of myself for doing it all on my own.
Having opened the bonnet though I noticed that the coolant I had replaced not but a week ago had mostly disappeared again so I shouted "fk it" and poured in some radweld plus to have its way with the water channels
Whilst doing so the neighbourhood mobile mechanic popped by to have a chat and see what I was up to where I explained the situation and he offered to do a sniff test.
The result being.... detection of hydrocarbons in the coolant causing the green liquid to turn yellow aka headgasket failure. Proper bummed out now.

After making myself proud I've now got to make a decision on what to do, do I continue on and ignore it since the car is pretty low value and has been running fine all this time. Invest in a Hg repair but cause the car to be off the road at a point in my life where I need to travel to interviews or sell up and buy a '6 lol

Well it was project beat a '6? Failed that, then project get back 20bhp or get hgf trying im pretty sure the ponies haven't returned and hg has said f*ck it I'm off?

There a theme here? Lol

I really like it tbh mate you have done a lot with it, if you want it repairing and you arnt confident doing it yourself let me know or I could lend a hand

Could the hg have been failing all along hence 20 ponies have f*cked off?

Either way be a shame to chuck the towel in now unless you fancy a x power grey turbo derv that is Wink

Really peeved off as pretty sure the neighbour made things worse, to do the sniff test he took the expansion cap off and revv'd the engine a bit to blow out some coolant so it wouldn't be touching the sniffer. When I came out later on to check on the coolant after it had cooled there was nothing in the expansion bottle, topped it up and drove 15 minutes today to find it had gone from max to under min in that time. Driving home after topping it up saw a similar story Angry

Dad has already tried it on me
"only £30 and if dont work then it's your money back"
yes dad or £50 will get me a full headgasket set
"yea but something will break and then it'll cost you more and more"

Appreciate the offer Danny problem is I'm all the way back south now although I do like xpower grey...but no I want to stay a petrol head Smile just much more fun to drive

It could well have been that the HG has failed all this time hence the 20hp loss or the vvc cams were never timed right or something else..

It is and I do love her more than the 306, I just need to be careful before I sink what money I have left into it and maybe not get a return on it
Especially since the brakes are now starting to squeek abit and pretty sure warped the discs at combe, maybe boiled the brake fluid too hence the amount i need to push the brake pedal

Also still no mayo

Also also how much would a skim be? and whats the chances I'll need it since the engine hasnt overheated or anything?

I wouldnt wait until you get mayo!

And I wouldnt say the neighbour has made a blown HG worse...its broken, kinda how it was and is.

Skim cost me £100ish round here, back in Hereford it cost me £25.
Its not worth doing the HG imo unless you do a skim

The neighbour won't have made things worse mate, don't worry. You can get the head done locally for as little as £20 mate, although i'd suggest paying a little more and getting it cleaned etc. Sam has a straight edge we can check the head with, might not even need it. I'd highly recommend decent oe-spec for the hg set, be a shit if you bought cheapies and had to do it again in six months. Don't trust the salesman telling you it's oe-spec either, they all say that, just make Jonny sort it out for you. Wink

You'll never make your money back on a car, stop trying lol.

Okay just seems coincidental how it's suddenly went from max to min in a week to 15 minutes. OH well suppose it's spurring me on get it sorted now. Especially after costing up parts last night I think it could be done to a sub £100 cost along with a new thermostat

Piggy - That''s quite a price difference! Was there a difference in what was done or just a location based thing

Poodle- do you know of a place round here that can do the skim if it needs it? I might regret saying this but the rover forum people or some others seem to be of the impression that an ebay seller of the name "shirley9293" sells some good quality gaskets and its more down to the prep work rather than the gasket.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130971234664?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Also been given a by an ex rover owner I know, a bag of valve stem seals, 2 metal head dowel things, flywheel locking tool, cam locking tool , coolant elblow gasket and tw oother gaskets I don't know what they are

I don't mean to make money with this car, it just won't happen but don't want to loose more than I have too not right now anyway as I'm not really earning and know I could easily spend a fortune putting everything right with this car

dan if it doesn't need it then I wouldn't bother, as long as he sorts it before he warps the head,
I would get the best headgasket set you can etc, and sort it.

As above, we'll check it properly with a straight edge, its not like we'll just be slapping it back on and hoping. Know a few places locally, the £20 place is the furthest I know and thats in pompey.

If the neighbour chucked some coolant out then it stands to reason it would need topping back up again, just meamt it was nothing to worry about. Probably be cheaper and better just to get them from Jonny, bit wary of advice from the rover forums lol. Unfortunately fixing cars is always going to be a risk to some extent, happy to help reduce that risk as much as I can thougj. Smile

I found the website of the "shirley" seller and they have a 5% discount code on their website so bolts and gasket comes to £28.50 delivered. And searching about it seems they have a decent enough reputation saying they've had many happy miles with their gaskets, so will probably get on with ordering tonight

I don't trust the rover forums at all, that's why I stopped going on them years ago.
I have my own support, and that's me, my self and I. the three of us have got a long spot on!
what I am going to do, is run my car on the waterless coolant, as I have been told that its better than the pink coolant, Some of the lads i have spoken to, run this.
