Flat sounding speaker
#1
So just spent ages swapping out the front pioneer 130/30w speakers for some new vibe slick 6 240/80w. I was hoping for some new crisp sound with good enough bass to justify getting rid of the 6 x 9s and the amp in the rear. Tidy up the car and what not.

However the new vibe sound really flat against the old pioneer. I've done one side to compare against the old speaker and while the sound is a bit clearer it doesn't have the bass of the old one.

Annoyed is not the word considering I had to cut up mdf to get it to fit.

I'm guessing an amp is in order to power them since I think the headunit is only 50w rms (iirc)
Question is would this amp suffice?

It's an ebay jobbie but it's 500w (240+240 = 480) so should power the front speakers fine

500 watt peak power (2 x 26W,BY 14.4V DC INPUT)

Peak being keyword. Its probably no better than what your headunit is doing.
Doesnt even own a 306.

Don't bother with one of those mickey mouse amps, it'll be a waste of time and money. Get a decent one used if that's what you want to do,

What was your reason for swapping out the Pioneers? Vibe aren't great, and just because they're more powerful doesn't mean they're better... I'd have Pioneer over Vibe any day.

Is your door sealed up well and are they mounted on a solid surface? Sounds like an installation issue tbh. If you're after a decent amp though I've got a Genesis profile 4 4 channel amp for sale. 4 x 75w or 2 x 140w bridged. Has filters so that it can run active, which means if you've got components 2 channels power tweeters and 2 the woofers.

The pioneers while bassy are very grainy on the vocals. so bad that I confused them for standard speakers, I wanted to upgrade so I could have some decent mid range(?)

They are mounted on mdf rings which I don't think are making a perfect air tight seal with the door. If I take it back off put some silicone on the ring and put it back would that help?
I got a 4 channel amp in the boot powering the 6x9's, just want a small 2 channel that I can stuff behind the dash for a tidy install since Im not a ice freak but would like my speakers to sound nice Sad

The profile 4 is tiny, smaller than a ream of a4 paper. They are designed to be put under a seat or behind the dash. Have a quick look on the web about them. You need to have an air tight seal between the door and mounting and also seal up holes in the door with weather sheeting or anti vibration sheets. Will make a huge difference Wink

I already coated the exterior skin with silent coat to help weigh it down stop panel rattle and what not Smile Think I'll try again with the air tight seal since the old pioneers are air tight but the vibes are not maybe that will help add some bass
Just wondering if I should have gone component rather than Co-Axial since the zr already has tweeters

try wooden flooring underlay behind the door card, helps to reduce noise and acts as a waterproof barrier

These are what was in there, thinking they might be the standard ones since I found an ebay listing saying he removed them from his rover
http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/archiv.../page.html

Think the bass thing might be because they are mid range speakers + tweeters whereas I just installed co-axial which have a higher frequency. Testing back in the car the vibes sound a lot clearer than these but when I turned the volume up they started making a noise. Guessing due to installation, will take door card off again and try and tidy up the gaps and what not and get it ready for later when I put in a proper component setup

wooden flooring underlay as in the green sheet stuff ?

You'll never beat a GTi-6 if you double the weight of the car adding sound deadening..

Jus' sayin'!

Yes thats the one u can get all types of variety.
Some with foil backing for thermal installs.

I also find foam carpet underlay like cloud 9 also helps to reduce road noise.
