might be doing a conversion later on in the year if funds permit. ive had a look into some prices on engines and they dont seem as expensive as what i thourght.
my engine as it stands is a 1.6 8v.
my question to you all is what engine would you put in and why.
the obvious one is a 6 just for power gains avalible but relyability is also an issue.

Have you thought about a 1.6 16v out the 106 them engines are dead cheap now and lots of the 8v 106 boys do the conversion so plenty of stuff / info out there. Just a thought though

1.8 16v.....not as heavy as the 6, more revvy too. I'd have one straight away if they didn't drink so much!

how much work would be involed to do this? the 16v conversion is looking like the best option at the mo. simple and cheap.

fair bit of work...new tank and lines for a start...wouldnt know RE clocks and inside but new engine loom, whole engine, gearbox and shafts etc....big job.
on a more helpful note...the '6s are heavy but readily available.
16v 1.6 goes well but does lack torque....
me....rebuild the 1.6 8v, toughened rods, xflow head, and...boost

you be surprised.
bet you could find a decent block to work on, theres zillions of 1.6 8vs out there...lots of people have turbo'd them so thats food info and parts.. start looking for turbo manifolds and little bits.
you be surprised how much funds you would need for a 16v conversion. and they not that reliable. constant chase for oil leaks
or just rebuild the lump you have. you wouldnt HAVE to go toughened rods if you werent going with stupid boost.
0.8bar from a gt1749...saab turbo, cheap and easy to get, with the right compression ratio, use a metal layer uprated headgasket to do that....and wumph....you be flying

^^^^ thats a good price. (16v convert)
but you could buy a gti6 for that!!
£1500 for a turbo conversion?? I assume thats all brand new parts and a garage doing it???
but the fun, joy and pride comes from doing it yourself.
anyone can throw money at a garage and come out with a faster car

But then as said £800~ can buy a GTi6. They VTS engine is 120bhp. De-cat, good exhaust, good air filter should see 140~ but I guarantee you'll crave more power.
Personally I'd buy a 6 and sell the 1.6 on.

Isn't this always the case though, regardless of how much power you have*? Unless it's just me.
*In cars we can afford, I'm not talkng about the Veyron or the Atom lol.

and this veyron owner may be thinking he wants more power...

Engine conversions are a waste of money unless you are going to gain alot, it's just not worth it.
I will just reiterate what everyone else has said, gti6 can be had for less than 1k now, more if you want a minty ph3. I would do that, then spend the money modifying that.

i aint got 1k. easier to raise £250 for a 16v and get my mate to drop it in. ans as said, decat, straight through and induction should see about 135 bhp. then maybe bodies at a later date when money permits.
or i could just save for a 6 lol

As i said at trax kingy , get a 1.6 16v in there, i think it would be pretty epic, very revy engine, it would be different, and still retain the 1.6ness that yours was born with, plus its the easyest option IMO

a modded 1.6 306 will cost more to insure than a '6 too I bet

How about a 1.3 8v rallye engine 100bhp standard 8000rpm limiter. Few choice mods and it would be as quick as a 1.6 16v
