So.....the clutch is slipping pretty bad now.
Every time it gets to 2k (max torque i assume) it slips and shoots up to 2500rpm, then grabs and revs drop/hold. Now this is pretty damn annoying, especially mid overtake!
Obviously it will need to be replaced, although it better not let let me down over the next couple of weeks...if it does I'll be getting petrol.....and a match.
Just wondering how much a garage would charge to change the clutch kit, and I guess the cable as well while it's getting done. So has anyone been quoted or had thiers done at one of the chain stores like halfords autocentre or anything? If so how much?
I know I've done one before but I don't have anywhere at home to change it, and I can't really afford to have the car off the road for long - and if I need a tool/part that I wasn't expecting I'd have no way of getting it without the car.
Just trying to weigh up (price dependant) whether it'd be better to just give it to a garage to do.....

It's a good 5hrs garage labour, so I assume the usual Halfrauds etc will charge you a good £200 + £200 for the kit I bet.
Cable is also a bugger to do, another 1hr of work there I think, and the cables are usually about £30, or I'd guess at £50 from Halfrauds.
If you do it DIY, probably £125-£150 for an LuK or Valeo kit, and £30 for a nice Peugeot cable.
I was in a similar predicament when I first bought my HDi. Clutch slipped after a week of ownership. I'd just done cambelt and some other jobs so was bored of working on the car. As a treat I took it to Peugeot. £££ raping later, I had to take it back AGAIN because a driveshaft oil seal was leaking, AND the clutch cable bung between engine bay and interior wasn't fitted right so the turbo sounded like it was in the footwell
Total cost, £420!
I'd take it to a trusted independent, cheaper and probably better imo for this car!

More like 5 weeks doing it for me an Rowell. But seriously, it can't have been much more than about 6 hours taking out breaks for us. With lifts and gearbox jacks I expected it to be much quicker!
Luk kit is 100 quid atm. Cable from Pug is 45, gearbox oil is 12.

You will get raped anywhere as the book is 5 hours. When my brothers clutch collapsed and I was here, cheapest Dad could find was 225 iirc at a clutch specialist, just for the clutch. Had to diy as my brother doesn't have that kind of money lying around.

Hmm, that's like £300 with fuel even at krisb, that's more than I can afford/than the cars worth having spent on it. DIY it is then!!
Either that or try px it with a newer lower milage one lol.
There's no chance if me keeping this for 20k Simon! But there's no point leaving it wd i'll just worry about it all the time. And no ones gonna buy the car as the clutch gets worse.

Yep it's 5hrs.
Half the problem is fiddly jobs. The actual gearbox off/drop/refit is kinda easy.
Wheels off, break ball joints, gearbox oil drain, that fiddly as feck weird thing that holds one of the driveshafts in, driveshafts out, cable off, remove all bolts, gearbox away, clutch out, new one in, align, fit bell gearbox back with arm in position (took me 3 attempts last time, and each time you kinda need to drop it to make sure it's all straight still), and then all the other stuff again.
I think the actual clutch is about 30min tops hehe...
Add another hour if you have FMIC pipes to get out of the way/refit etc...
God it gives me nightmares.
Just the cable is probably a good hour on it's own, that is a fiddly bugger!
I think the main thing you don't want to damage is that fiddly weird thing that holds driveshafts in. Or damage driveshaft oil seals when removing/refitting the driveshafts... maybe if you think you might damage it, get spares, as it's another hour or hour and a half work to replace one taking it steady (oil drop again!)... so handy to have spares there and then

I don't understand why people have nightmares, it's not a hard job it just takes time and you need to be methodical.
Tom you'll chuck money up the wall going to a dealer, why not wait for a weekend where Rowell is back so that at least if you need yo fetch a part he's around.

Yeah I did the diablo clutch as I've said twice in the thread now, I think Dave must've missed it.
We did clutch and cable, however that was on his nans hardstanding driveway with a car port, not my muddy sloping mess of a drive! plus no one needed that car, and I still had my own car to drive about (well until the golf died, that's why it took us so long as I couldn't get to Sams!).

It takes strength as well which is something I don't have, I absolutely hate popping bottom ball joints for example. And manouvring the gearbox alone isn't something that looks easy because of the odd angles you have to get it from. Then there's other pain in the ass jobs, I know the intermediate will be seized in now, like it was on the diablo, and also on JJs HDi (it took me and Dum about halt an hour to get that bugger off! Even after the engine was out!). And the cable bung is impossible, rowells still isn't in, and won't be unless we rip out the ac pipes while doing the fmic.
I can't do it at a weekend as I'll need the garage drive which mum would be using. Will have to be done in one day while she's at work. I'm not sure if Rowell just comes home for weekends, but even if he did it wouldn't really work. If he came over as soon as i asked, that'd be 45 mins, then an hour round trip for both of us to get parts, plus day 15 mins actually getting them.....that's 2 hours wasted and there's only like 6 hours of light atm! Anyone thinking of moving to Tue arse end.of no where, really don't bother, its shit.

It only took me 15 mins (while Sam went for a haircut....) And I managed to put the centre plate in backwards first time. that was the very thing I was trying to avoid as well!

I have done 2 clutches now, and if I can do it you can as I can assure you I am the least patient person when it comes to fiddly bits. The hardest thing I find is getting that dam pin out of the clutch arm but I don't even think you need to do that on an hdi?

I'm not particularly patient either! You'll never do a job ever if you just think of all the things that COULD go wrong. Remember that it COULD also all go right. My car has done double your mileage, and everything came off fine for my clutch last year. What else can you need besides gearbox oil, droplinks, fork bushes and a clutch kit?
Dad helped me put the box on, which took all of 4 minutes to do. I'd done everything by myself up to that point aswell, and then rebuilt it by myself afterwards. You've done one before, you know what you need to do.

I like to think I have a lot of patience lol, well not actual patience as I get easily frustrated BUT I will carry on until somethings done, don't just give up.
And yeah you don't take the arm off for the HDi, not even sure if you can lol.

Yeah it COULD all go right, but whats the chance of that?
Plus, the cable lol, and hub nuts, and a hub nut socket, plus a can of plusgas. But its not what I'll need, it's what I'll break that I worry about lol, I'm too good at shearing bolts and breaking tools!
I'm pretty sure I'll give it a go myself again, and just hope it goes ok.

Weirdly, it's stopped slipping now though. Unless its just that roads so wet atm the tyres are slipping before the clutch now maybe!! Still juddery as hell when engaging though, not gonna replace it unless it starts slipping badly again now though. Long as it lasts 6 weeks or so....

Tom, its common for the clutch to slip after a map and then bed back in again, mine did it a few times then was fine for ages before it finally went
