I'm getting confused with this when I look for something suitable on amazon it doesent mention that it is compatable with a smart tv. Am I looking for the right thing. For example would this work so I can record stuff from my tv

Ah ok. Not sure about the sonys but i know all the samsung smart tvs, you can just plug in a hard drive and it will work with the media you have on it providing its in a format the tv can read.

Any external HDD would work with any Smart TV (capable of recording out to the USB). So yes, the one you "linked" to would work.

only thing i would do to be safe, is to make sure the USB HDD you are using is powered, i.e comes with a seperate power supply. As depending on the TV USB Voltage, it might not be enough to power a self-USB powered disk.

probably not record directly to it (again, depends on specific make of TV + Firmware revision)
you would most likely be able to transfer stuff to it though
