For the sake of 20 miles Id rather have a working alternator.

Oh in that case its f*cked, the best I had after removing the jump leads was 11.5v ish and it dropped down to 9 before the car cut out.

Electrical indeed. Normally it is accompanied by dimming lights! lol

Check the wires are attached to it properly and are not corroding else you'll solve nothing.

Probs just knackered regulator / brush pack on the alternator, costs about 15 normally for brand new / 10 mins to change...that's all that genrally dies on alternators...

I have a feeling it could be worse than that, it had been eating my coolant overflow hose.

Very very bumpy road near tesco in Havant
Long straight. If you go over the bridge come down then hit the bump you get air.... not that I would know

Cheers Stevie. My airbag lights aint coming on cos all the ECUs and wiring for them has been binned. Is there anything I need to know about changing it.

check theres close to battery voltage on ignition at the thin wire first as it won't charge without voltage there unless the engine revs are past 2500. other than that just disconnect the battery

EDIT: heres a link to the one i got http://www.hcdk.com/Default.aspx?ID=7&Gr...cing=VALEO or you could try a new voltage regulator as thats what goes on them 99% of the time which you can find on ebay with some cross referencing
