The phase3 hdi beam won't have a brake compensator Smile

I went from drums to a hdi beam on my non abs 1.6 and didn't fit a compensator and the rear used to lock up under hard brakeing

Ph3 cars have a special abs pump so they don't have need for a compensator.

And if your locking your wheels up with no abs, don't brake so hard and get better tyres lol

My Dimma has no abs and I've only ever locked it up twice in 3 years of owning it Smile

Could always fit the compensator from your old beam if you don't have ABS.

I was telling the op if he doesn't have abs and fits a beam with no compensator there is a good chance the rears will lock up. Under hard breaking eg emergency stops. Not normal driveing. My old car was a phase1 1.6 no abs and I fitted a beam off a hdi and didn't fit a compensator hence the rears locking up.
As you say the phase3 doesn't need a compensator as the abs pump is different but being a phase 2 it will need the abs and a compensator to work as it should. Granted half the time the compensater is seized any way lol

Yes you just need to alter the brake pipes exc I know a few members will proberly say don't fit it but from my experience the rear will lock up under hard breaking. Decent tyres or not. My phase 2 gti6 has abs and a compensator as standard. So there must of been a reason for it.
But then agen the compensator can seize so it doesn't work anyway.
If I was to do the swap on a phase 1/2 abs or non abs agen I personally would fit it. Smile

I suppose its down to personal choice as i know some members have sed in the past its not needed. if you want to fit it or not is up to you. My opinion is for the lil bit of extra work fit it Wink
I'm can guarante someone will be along shortly and say you don't need it tho lol

Yep, me lol

As mentioned, my ph2 setup, has no abs, no rear compensator, and I've only ever locked it up twice, on track that is.

So you agree that the rear will lock up then :p

You don't really need the compensator as they just effect how much the rear brakes do depending on the weight in the back of the car.
The bit that would make a big difference and could cause the rear brakes to lock is the bias valve. You can buy aftermarket bias valves, then you can adjust them to suit you.

Brake compensators are dangerous if you're going low at all. Turn 306s very tail happy.

I guess it just depends how low you go, if you go very low, every time you touch the brakes its like pulling the hand brake.

Thats prob because it so fecking low that it confusses the compensater as they arnt desgined to operate at that height. Along with the fact you have no movment in the beam

You say the phase 3 has a special ABS pump, so would swapping the pump also work the same as fitting the valve to the phase 3 axle?
