As I was doing my service today I pulled out my fuel filter to find metal swarf sat at the bottom of the filter housing, it has to be coming from somewhere between the tank and the filter, the car has covered 180k. Is this just general wear and tear on a Diesel engine? Never seen this before hope someone can educate me on what it is

Same.
There's no mechanical bits between the tank and filter so not an issue. Just your filter doing its job mate. You'd be right to be upset if that mess made it into your fuel pump. ![]() I Don't Have A 306.

Well there's a lift pump there lol... BUT it's been proven not to be that as people previously thought. Don't think anyone has come up with a definitive answer yet...

the fuel gauge sender, is the swarf magnetic??
the fuel gauge sender?? is the swarf magnetic?? What sort of fuel lift pump is it, gear, impellor?? not to mention the electric motor parts?? anyone have a completely dead pump etc to do an autopsy??

Just noticed it's an xud, even though hdi is in his name lol. There's no pump in that case, it's literally just a pipe into the tank in the fuel sender unit.
You do get the same on HDis though and no one seems to know where it comes from lol.

Some think it's from the pumps at the fuel stations.

Through the return and back to the filter?
That makes sense. Best check if it's magnetic or not, pump body is aluminium. ![]() I Don't Have A 306.

yeah, some in our hdi filter bottom, and some "glitter" seen on tank floor when I checked/cleaned that too.
Did'nt check to see if it was magnetic, would be nice to know where it came from, no tank pump in this car, but it has a fuel sender unit, swiper and wire resisiter.......may be from them? ? |
