Bored at work. Sorry for all the questions Tongue

What does this do? Two of the lines goes to the filter, and the other two to the pump.
The lines are very small. And can't say I have noticed it on any of the engine bay pictures I have seen. Why does the diesel have to go through this? Why not just connect directly between the filter and pump?
