Nope, not because Peugeot....
All manufacturers do this...Infact IMO Peugeot dont do this as much as most... Consider yourself lucky that we can bolt engine/boxs from 2010 etc straight into cars from 1988 etc without modifying anything... Bolt gearboxs from a 1980's 205 straight to a 20 year newer 16v common rail engine.....cylinder heads on random engines they dont belong from many years before / after....same with manifolds...etcetc.....
It can be annoying when you find little things that have changed, but in grand sceme of things, we are actually quite lucky!

Darren actually has a fair point. The only other engine that has this as far as I know would be that zetec engine in the focus. Still using a variant of it in brand spankers' atm.

Agree with Darren here.
Do people really think they would go through the cost and R&D to redesign things for no reason when they have off the shelf parts they could use?
If they had a part they could already use, they would. Just playing devils advocate but i would imagine that the reason the lugs are offset on the bottom one is because there is a waterway in a different location on that block maybe? There will always be a reason for it!
