ABS Ring Replacement
#1
Hello,

Just wondering if I'd be able to change an ABS ring at home?

Not sure how hot it needs to be to expand? Would a heat gun get hot enough?

Or would it have to be a garage job with a blowtorch?

Cheers
Tom

Try a heat gun, failing that, get yourself a handheld blowtorch

Would rather not have to buy one as the ring only costs £2 lol. Will try the heatgun though, see how it goes.

Cut old one off, put new one in oven for 10 mins on hot hot, wear oven glove, smash it on.

Simple as that lol

What sort of temp would you put the oven at?

Old one is split btw, so should come off without cutting hopefully!

I replaced my front offside ABS ring last year - just tapped it on carefully with a hammer, no heat involved. Still fine 10k later! Was £2 delivered from eBay I think.

£1.40 posted for the one I think I need...

Should be tighter than just tapping on surely lol? But nice and easy if that is the case!

It's definitely not going to come off was a nice tight fit once tapped on, it's fairly soft metal so probably just stretches slightly

A bit too soft clearly if they're that prone to splitting! Dodgy

Have ordered one now anyway, will see how it goes. Smile

Well typically I ordered the wrong size lol. Got the right size yesterday and fitted fairly easily. Didn't use any heat, did use a lump hammer though lol. However it was over 20c in the sun, so might be a different story in the depths of winter.
