*106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - D@wson - 13-11-2012

Hey guys move this thread if you want wasn't sure where to put it.

Pug 106 Petrol 1.4

Passenger side strut when driving makes a horrendous knocking noise sounds like up and down as well as side to side.

Just had it on the drive i can move the wheel inwards towards the drivers side quite drastically but when its jacked up its even worse. The model doesn't have drop links I have checked the bottom arm and the TRE am I correct in guessing its the top mount?

Sister in law has said its been clunking on full lock for 12 months so i presume the top mount bearings have finally collapsed?

Thanks for any input.

Richie.

My top mounts have collapsed, just feels rough and non PAS...

Sounds like ball joint to me, I've even known them fall apart and pull the shaft out and the wheel away from the car.

If not, checked the wheel bearing?

Id say drop link

How much movement is it? Top mount could be at fault

RE: *106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - samass - 13-11-2012

Top mount or lower ball joint

A very large amount of movement. 20cm +

RE: *106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - Matt - 13-11-2012

20cm?! Don't drive the bloody thing. I'd be checking that the top mount is still actually connected and that the balljoint hasn't snapped

RE: *106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - samass - 13-11-2012

Christ! Yeah don't drive that shit, something must clearly be disconnected entirely!

RE: *106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - D@wson - 13-11-2012

Yeah its definitely something to do with the top mount. It looks dodgy to start with as the main strut bolt has two nuts on!

*106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - Matt - 13-11-2012

I'd definatley have that off then!

Strip it out either your ball joint is knackered or the top mount is completely shot

RE: *106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - Jake949 - 14-11-2012

cant see a top mount cauing that much movement? i thought if anything that would only move like 5cm max?
only thing that would cause that amount of movement was if something had snapped

RE: *106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - 306Dan - 14-11-2012

easy way to tell top mount failure even if you dont know cars
jack the car up on pass front in this case and axle stand it on the subframe
get someone to look at the top mount while you move the wheel and see if the central nut/strut moves

hope this helps

oh and massive movement can be more than one thing, starts as one thing damages others and gets worse

RE: *106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - samass - 14-11-2012

i say just start stripping it all back, it'll be pretty apparant whats f*cked if its moving 20cm...

RE: *106* Passenger strut moving inwards. - D@wson - 14-11-2012

Fixed it for her, top mount bearing had collapsed and bottom ball joint was loosey goosey.

The shocks on 106/saxo also get a bit of play in them. Similar movement to knackered topmount / lower BJ.

oh, and when there's play in the shocks there's usually a knock when manouvering into parking spaces and low speed turning lock 2 lock
