Making brake lines - Nathan1305 - 11-10-2014

Will be changing my rear beam soon but need to make new brake lines. What's required all I could think of is: brake pipe (getting 25m), brake unions, pipe bender and flailing tool.

Is there anything else that's needed to make brake lines for the rear?

Something to cut the pipe cleanly and some fine ish sand paper/ file to debur.

Got a pipe cutter

RE: Making brake lines - Nathan1305 - 12-10-2014

Yeah getting a pipe cutter as well, so is that pretty much it?

Indeed Smile

Good to get some waxoil or similar to give it all a coat when done Smile

You want a flaring tool, not a flailing tool Tongue

RE: Making brake lines - Stef205 - 12-10-2014

Don't buy a cheap flaring tool like the common ones you see on ebay, in my experience they don't flare nicely. I have a sealey flared which is the same a the snap on/blue point. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-PFT08-On-Vehicle-Brake-Flaring-Tool-/231351543549?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35dda066fd

I used the cheap ones without a problem, was under £20 from Halfords iirc...

Can't find it on Halfords site, but it's this one - https://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cht229-pipe-flaring-cutting-kit-?da=1&TC=SRC-brake%20pipe

RE: Making brake lines - swampy - 12-10-2014

Have to agree those cheap hand held flare tools are ok for a temporary repIr but I would t make permant pipes with them in the Landy when we go off roading

The one I use is a sealey item and cost me £120 about ten years ago!

Don't forget you will need a good bleeding system aswell

Probably go for that one, it's just to get some rear pipes made up for my new beam

RE: Making brake lines - Piggy - 12-10-2014

What one do you have mate Smile

RE: Making brake lines - Piggy - 12-10-2014

Signet one i got YEARS ago

RE: Making brake lines - mattsrallye - 13-10-2014

I have this flairing tool and it's excellent, never failed to make a good flair, although it is a bit more money.

What pipe bender are you getting? I have a cheaper version the type below and only really use it at the brake unions to keep things tidy, the rest is mostly done by hand.

RE: Making brake lines - Piggy - 13-10-2014

Yeah I would think buying a pipe bender is a bit over the top...esp when its so easy by hand and often the pipe needs odd bends and twists here and there that a pipe bender wont do

RE: Making brake lines - HDIkyle - 13-10-2014

The bias valves use 2 different size unions also i found while part way tho so worth checking first
