Weird starting problem :s - Ben - 05-10-2013

A couple of weeks ago the car wouldn't start due to a faulty stop solenoid on the pump. I changed the solenoid and since then I've had a very intermittent starting problem.
90% of the time it will start first time, but the other times I have to put a jump lead from battery straight to solenoid, then it will start fine. As soon as its started I can remove the jump lead and it continues to run.

Seems really strange to me how its so irregular

So without the lead it will just keep turning over on the starter or does it just click?

Without using the lead it just cranks and cranks. Pretty sure the solenoid is being opened by the ignition only 90% of the time. Once opened with the leads and its started I can take the lead off straight away and the solenoid remains held open

Try running a different ignition live.

I had a problem very similar to this wired it up to reverse sensor wires been fine ever since

Exactly what I did when I had this problem

I'm going to do this later, does anyone know which wire will be the ignition live one? I have no multimeter and don't really want to have to cut more than one..
Also will I need to raise the value of the fuse as the wiring is going to be used for something which I assume will pull more current?

RE: Weird starting problem :s - Tom - 20-10-2013

I would of thought the stop solenoid doesnt pull a serious amount of current like that. Cant help with the revers sensor though.

RE: Weird starting problem :s - Ben - 20-10-2013

No I wouldn't think it uses much, I just thought it would use quite a bit more than a sensor..

The solenoid uses about half - 1 amp nothing much at all
