fitted new pump now wont start :( - Tonibruce - 14-09-2013
just finished putting the bosch pump on my car, and now wont start
i have been turning it over for ages with the injectors cracked but barely any fuel comes out when its turning over? could it be stop solenoid stuck? i have put a 12v feed from the battery to the solenoid and it makes a little clicking sound. Or could anyone give me any ideas what could be up?

Inside the pump could be rusty and not pumping.
Has it been sat around without diesel in it for any period of time?

if you have some diesel at the injectors then you are doing better than I was last week...and then mine kicked into life!!
have you disconnected the glowplugs and not reconnected?
how much fuel is at injectors?

Crack the injectors and crank at full throttle, diesel should be shooting out of those buggers!

right i have got it running now only by turning the max fuel screw nearly all the way in, the pump was stored with diesel and is meant to have been rebuilt around 5000 miles ago with new seals and 11mm, but now it is really slow to rev and has no power at all, when i did the timing i locked the crank, cam and put the 2 bolts in the pump pulley so im deffo sure i have got the timing right

Squeeze the primer when you rev and see what happens.

Did you time the belt in this order
Crank,fuel pump, cam and water pump
In other words anti clock wise
This makes sure it tensions on correct side

i just put the belt on and then released the tensioner, does that make a difference then? and i have drove it for around 15 mins and didnt get any better so dont think there is air, and i tried sqeezing the primer and it didnt change anything

has the LDA been setup right...and you say fuel screw is ALL the way in??
how is the lever assembly setup?

Yeah can get timing out if not done in that order even if it was locked off

the adjustment of retarding/advancing the pump is about two teeth! so a tooth wont cause this...especially with him locking all the pins in
shouldnt need much on the fuel screw to be hones.
my 11mm is in by about a turn and a half...and its giving the 2.1 PLENTY of fuel!!!!

How do I set up the LDA up properly? And i haven't changed anything just bolted the pump on and connected the throttle cable up. Yeah the screw has to basically be all the way in or it won't run or start, thanks for all the replies appreciate it

Did you manually turn the engine over and re check the timing holes? That could be the issue.
How does it sound? If it sounds like a very loud transit it's probably timing or lots if white smoke. But it's it's just generally under powered its probably fuel starvation of some sort. Does it coal?

pics of pump to show setup be good I think.
no smoke/coaling but quiet engine sounds like no fuel.
if timing was out, with an 11mm it would still coal like hell

Make sure you have the inlet and outlet fuel banjo bolts in the right place, if you have the outlet banjo on the inlet line there will be a massive restriction as the outlet banjo only has a bleed hole in it, where as the inlet banjo bolt has a normal/large hole.

erm....
your throttle cable isnt connected to the throttle arm!
try that!!!!!
AND theres no spring under the throttle arm!!?
and the max fuel screw is not even half way in! The warranty seal is still on it even!!!!
who fitted this??

AND theres no wire on the stop solenoid...not sure how you even got it started!
The more I look the more silly things arent right with it!

that boost compensator hose looks a little weird too.

and where does it rest?
and is that how you have the max screw positioned at the moment?
Lets start again:
that waranty seal needs removing asap from the max fuel screw.
you need to wire in the stop solenoid...not sure how you even started it without it wiring in....I would hazard a guess that THIS IS YOUR ISSUE!
unless its different, the throttle arm spring is needed!
The return fuel pipe needs a hose clip as does the boost compensator pipe on the intercooler end of the pipe.

Right I have put it all back together now and ill get some proper pictures tomorrow for you, and there was a wire to the solenoid but I just removed it
