Mot failures! - Toast - 11-06-2013
Good evening guys just got back from the test station with a big fat freddy. Just looking for some advice as to the best way going about repairs.
Failures
1. Offside track rod end ball joint has excessive play.
Shouldn't have a problem doing this one
2/3 nearside and offside headlamp aim too low.
Whats the best way of checking these are at the corrext level?
4. Parking break efficiency below requirements
8%
Thought this was a good level
5 off and nearside recorded little or no effort
Guys in the garage said this could be due to the break pads wearing thin which was an advisory. Changed the fronts the other week with no problems are the rear disks similar?
As for the other advisories both anti roll bar ball joints have play.
As I understand these are the drop links is that right?
Cv boot damaged but not letting in dirt.
Oil leak
Steering wheel rubber is loose
And finaly the undertray was not fitted securly.
The failures are my obvious important parts to sort, but there is also a rumble coming from the drivers side front wheel. I was hoping that something would be shown up in here that would give me an idea as to what was causing it. Its speed dependent and not affected by the revs so I had thought it was knackered bearings.
Is this likely to be cause by thr track rod or the anti roll bar? Or am I looking for another cause?

Wheel bearings are known to rumble when they're bust.
The handbrakes are always shit, not sure if theres a cure for that, new pads cant do any harm though!
Not sure on headlamp aim, all test stations have a machine to line it up with though, maybe your suppose to pay them to do it? Im not sure :/
Also roll bar ball joints sounds like droplinks to me, no other ball joints on that bugger.

Cheers bud. Yeah they said it would be drop links what are they like to change and are rear pads similar in what the fronts are like to change?

Rear pads are easy to change, little different to the fronts though, make sure to wind the piston in and if you can give the calipers and tap at the same time as pressing the pedal, will help to set them and give a better handbrake, it settles in the worms or something, did it on mine and its definitely better. Droplinks, just destroy the old ones and get them off then fit new ones, simple.

head wise make sure the adjusters are free and working and the mot garage normally will set them for u last time they charged me me a fiver

Might be worth giving calipers an overhaul, I took my handbrake mech a part
Cleaned up and regreased and it made a big difference.
