Surely it wouldnt be safe to put your hand over the inlet?

Its not on a runaway car really. Ive heard stories of peoples fingers getting broken doing it as the forces involved are pretty huge, mine sucked the glove off jonnys hand and tried ripping the gloves off mine. The force on mine was split between 4 inlet runners as the UIM was off.

At 6000rpm (runaway engine speed) the engine is trying to suck in 100L of air a second, double that it its at a bar of boost at the time. And imagine the force involved if you look at it as 100-200L of water trying to flow through a 60mm pipe in 1 second and you see the force involved.
