was it running a bosch pump before? if not you may have the fuel in and return the wrong way round as there not the same.

seen this problem before the person forgot to swop the flow in and return around i changed them car ran great
off another site
The numbers stamped on the pump:-
0 460 494 342
VE R 445 - 2
XUD 203
?? 465 33218

If I cross-reference the above number with Bosch online Catalogue:-
0 460 494 342
VE4/9F2250R445 - 2

Provided you have it plumbed right ( upload a pic ). It's probs just a tight vane pump, very easy repair, certainly no need for a new pump !

If it runs when primed then cuts out it almost certainly the fuel in and fuel out pipes put on the wrong way round. Pump was really clean inside and full of fresh diesel, so I doubt the vane pump has any issues.

Fuel lines on Bosch/Lucas are different ways round. On a Bosch it should come off the top of the fuel filter housing and go into the left/drivers side of the pump. The other pipe should come off the right of the pump and go straight down the back of the engine bay.

Heh well nice and easy if you just need to flip the lines.....follow the pipe from the prime grenade, where does it connect to pump? left side or right side?

all plummed in correct as you said dan, vanes are f*cked so i have ordered another for £84 of ebay.i will sell the knackered one as spares.i dont have the experience to fix it and its not worth paying £40 an hour for a merchanic to do.

i had mine plumbed in wrong way and then swapped round thanks to JP, but then would run longer than 30-60 seconds to find that the fuel in banjo bolt was another return bolt previous owner of pump put in to sell as he lost it.

so pump was being starved with banjo bolt in my case
