Power Steering Pump, All The Same?

Power Steering Pump, All The Same?

DT has shit its PAS pump so need a new one. Got a 406 hdi outside, would the pump from that fit? Got same engine as a 306 hdi I think.

If not, what else am I looking at to get one from? Obviously the xud but what about the petrol xu engines?

Anyone?

Dum has one from his GTi but I have no idea if it'll fit as eBay is telling me there are different pulley sizes for pumps that look the same.

I replaced one on my dt and there are different types even on xud's so the Hdi defo won't fit!

The part numbers for an HDi & the larger petrol engine versions aren't the same. As has been previously suggested though, I think it's just the size of the pulleys that differs (presumably to account for the different speeds the engines generally run at).

What are the symptoms of your steering btw? Pump more likely to be failure point I think, but sometimes that's because a leak has occurred at the rack end. Both can potentially be refurbished by a power steering specialist.

Hi, Thanks for your help.

The noise is mainly happening at full lock in both directions.

This is making this noise, which is why I feel it is the pump:

The power steering fluid level was just below maximum, but I have done a complete flush and renews the fluid.

I have not noticed any leak, so if there is one is would be very minor and hard to see. I would probably have to get under the car and check.

Mine has always made a slight noise on full lock but it isn't particularly noticeable. If you're getting noise like the vid

It's hard to say for sure but the pump is the most likely the candidate for a whining noise.

I am getting noise like in the video at lock, but I also get a whine when parking and I am not lock-to-lock. During parking, the whine is a lot less.

Your call really. It's always a bit of a risk buying parts from breakers, although I've been mostly lucky in the past. If it works out it's certainly economical. For me the key is how long you plan to keep the car.

Other option is to have the current one rebuilt. Had mine done at a place in Bristol as bearings were shot...cost about £70.

Btw, if you're replacing the pump yourself n haven't done one before make sure you turn the wheel lock to lock about 10 times with the engine off before you start it. (You really need the car jacked up for this). This should clear out enough air out of the system to prevent damage to the new pump.

Not sure how long I plan to keep the car at the moment. I have thought about selling it as I don't use it much and especially at the moment I don't really use the car enough to justify keeping it. I have thought about selling the car and saying the pump will need changing, but then this might put buyers off.

£70 is not bad at all for a rebuild tho.
