Thai's so true. The whole reason I stay on here even though I don't have a 306 is the people. I've posted stuff about all the cars I've had since my last 306 (Audi 80, 106 GTI, Golf GTI, Calibra and hopefully this afternoon an A3) and had nothing but positive, helpful comments.
However, I go on Retro Rides as well, and I've had a thread asking for help with my 106 removed by a mod with the comment "too new and chavvy for us", been told that I'm just trying to provoke people by putting a pic of my Calibra up, and been epically flamed for suggesting someone put a diesel engine in a petrol car...
This place is pretty special I think, and so is .net Smile

Quite absurd that the author of the article sould cite deciding between an Ipod and an exhaust a 'tough lifestyle choice' when other people in the country are barely making ends meet. Apart from that, if you are a car enthusiast it wouldn't be a question anyway. My car is what keeps me getting up in the morning, I don't have/want/need the latest smartpad or whatever it is.

As for the main point of the article, that is something I have been thinking for a very long time, I mean, look how much infighting is in our own community, let alone the community as a whole. The likes of Dan! and Connor, in years to come will think 'Why did we fight with Flynn, he was the quintessential car enthusiast' but they will not listen now, only when it is too late. Why invent derogatory terms like 'French tin' and 'Japcrap' when we all love cars? You only have to go on the Youtube vids of Vtecs to see the blatant infighting and racism within our own communities! Mainly perpetuated by short sighted individuals.

Reminds me of certain people and forums!

I think the advantage we have on this forum, is while we all live for the 306, we understand that in the grand scheme of things, they're fairly shit. We all aspire to bigger and better things, whether it's just a small step up, or some supercar pipe-dream, for many the 306 is just a stop-gap car.

On a number of other forums, they see their particular make/model of car as the pinnacle of the automotive world, the car they always aspired to own, which makes them elitist and quick to flame any alternatives!

I disagree vehemently and in entirety.

However, I do not conform to your equally ludicrous stereotype of other car enthusiasts that a Peugeot 306 is 'the pinnacle of the automotive world' as you so elequently put it.

It would appear that for people to fit into your convenient little boxes their views must be one extreme or the other. The problem with you guys is that you seem to think it is a competition to undermine and put yourselves down before anyone else can, a sort of defense mechanism if you will to protect your fragile egos. Therefore, you like to call your pride and joy 'shit' so that you cannot be insulted by other people saying so. Quite sad.

My view of the 306 falls somewhere in between the two extremes that you perpetuate. The plans for my 306 are to own it for a very long time, modding it along the way. This is until I purchase an Impreza WRX at which time I will run my 306 alongside it (whilst modding), as a more economical and reliable vehicle, depending on whether I decide to tune the Impreza or not.

Like it, good message.

Flynn, please stop preaching at people, it's getting embarrassing. You say we should all learn from the article and get along, then in the same breath you start flaming everyone... O.o You've got some good points to make, but you tend to swamp it in bs, it's not doing you any favours.

At no point in my life have I called my car shit, if it was I wouldn't own it! I really like my car, but have every intention of moving on to 'better things' some time after uni when my financial situation is a bit better.

You just said yourself that you aspire to own an Impreza, thus proving my point. But I shall resist the temptation to poke the troll lol

Good article, it is something we are all guilty of..

The reasons I own and modify a 306 are simple. I don't pretend it's the best car in the world, it is far, far from it. But, I would say that it is, without exception, the ideal car for me at this moment in time. Sure, I might be more comfortable and get there faster in a brand new Audi A6 estate. But I couldn't afford to buy or insure one one. There are more reliable, more modern cars out there too. But when it did break, It would invariably be not feasible for me to fix at home, and I couldn't afford the garage bills. In the twisty's, I might be faster in an MX5. But I couldn't put 5 kayaks on the roof, 5 people inside, and all their stuff in the boot to go out paddling for the day. The 306, for me, is a relatively cheap car that drives well, is more than reliable enough and easy to maintain that my garage bills are zero, and has ample space for what I need to use it for. It's a compromise, like everything in life.

As far as modifying is concerned, I feel that everyone has their own opinion, and that people should respect that. I'm not saying you should be forced to enjoy other people's lifestyle, just that you shouldn't necessarily give them grief for it! Let everyone get on with their own thing, and appreciate the work they have put in to it.

Finally, I feel that as a young driver who drives a modified car, I am often frowned upon, you can literally feel the hate coming from some people, yet ask them what they drive, and they will quite happily tell you that they have no idea how they get to work in the mornings, they just get in a metal box with wheels and switch off their brains. That annoys and scares me. Lots.

Its true, im 18 and obviously into modifying, but you get hated on so hard by near enough everyone. Thing is, your exactly the same as everyone else (Roaring around, handbrake turning, speeding, dangerous driving) until you prove them otherwise. And its so much harder getting a good reputation than it is to get a bad one.

I like to think im not a complete idiot in my car but i no most people out there will disagree because im an 18 year old lad.

Try being 24 and constantly being told that your old enough to know better. I had a row with Gens stepdad last week because he thought I should put a new bathroom suite in before I bought a new car. Nothing to do with anyone else how I spend my hard-earned...

I didn't aim it specifically at him, I just meant the normal people of this website and indeed society have that attitude.

1. I am not trolling

2. Yes I do want to own an Impreza, that does not mean I don't want to own a modded 306.

3. Unlike you, I don't particularly want to move on to 'better things' I see no limit in modding at all. As long as it is a trickle of money I'm spending, rather than massive chunks all the time, I can't see the problem, most people blow £100 in one weekend on a 'night out' as they call it and certainly see no return from that! Hell, by their own admission some of the baffoons don't even remember the events of said night!

4. Every mod is a new experience. I can't not mod, for me it is what cars are all about. I couldn't bare to change my car after all the work I plan to put into it. If I found myself in a better financial situation all of a sudden that money would go on mods, not towards a perceived 'better car'.

Mate, that will be me if I live to f*cking 70. Phuck everyone I will do what I want with my life and my middle finger proudly in the air. 24 is phucking young, I'm 22 and my life hasn't even started yet, still live at mummy's yard part time  :x

Great read that, Amen brothers.

Having dipped my finger into various genre's of modified cars I understand exactly where the fella's coming from. Hell, the abuse I recieved for driving a matt grey/rusty 306 was comical, even now for the fact I fitted daft orange wheels to a 22 year old minicab lol

Thats why I tend not to get into the "here's a barried up Corsa I spotted" type of threads. So what if it looks bobbins, if its making its owner happy and doing no harm its all good Smile

Whilst I do agree that it was a good read and is true that we "should all get on" I do think there has to be a limit to the "if it makes the owner happy" idea. There is a guy over the back of my house with a golf that has the loudest exhaust I have ever heard and I get woken up by it every morning at about 6 without fail. Also doesn't help he can't get the thing over speed bumps because it is practically on the floor.
I agree that if someone wants pink wheels, fine but there has to be a limit to some things!

I think providing it doesn't affect anyone else, what does it matter?! I only get annoyed when you get these guys who insist on having a stupidly loud exhaust, HIDs to blind you when your behind them etc etc

Flynn, you succinctly personify the word oxymoron. That is all I will say on the matter.

Quite a sobering read that. Makes you think twice about things you could say/opinions you may have on other peoples cars.

Thing is I still feel like I'm messing about, rather than 'modifying' in the true sense of the word. I complain at having dropped a couple of grand on the '6 making bits better, but that's less than the cost of some of the most basic parts of a lot of high-power GTRs out there in comparison. Makes me feel a little like I'm throwing my pocket money at my car, rather than making a proper investment.

Either way, I'll always be interested in 'fettling' my cars. I like getting technical and extracting the best from them, and researching the next suspension component/engine mod. It's all part of the fun. I will definitely appreciate other peoples' directions with their cars a bit more though in light of that article.

Even though Moonstone Euro XSi's are shit ninja and sunroofs on ph2 gtis are fail too ninja and don't get me STARTED on Audi A3s lmao

I quite agree with everything that article says. However when people from said "car scene" decide to speed down my road almost ploughing into children, dogs, random ufo's I will not want to lay off him, in fact I will want to pummel him into the dirt.

In my opinion, that is the only thing that gives negative rep to the world of modded cars.

What gives car modding a bad name are the morons who strap a cherry bomb to their standard nissan micra and then drive like lewis hamilton.
