Relocating P/S reservoir
#1
Thinking of putting the power steering reservoir into the back, couple of questions clanging on around in my head if someone would be so kind as to help shed some light;

-Does the level of the resevoir in relation to the P/S pump have any baring on the fluid? Would I need to be re-installing it back into the same level?

-With the added plumbing, will i need less fluid in the reservoir as there is more in the system? If that makes sense? I.e. more pipes holding more fluid, so less in resevoir? No?

-Will fuel hose fit the bill?

Muchos gracias.

I can't see why it would matter if its above or below the pump or how much hose aslong as there is enuff fluid to fill the system with the res at the correct level.

1)More fluid will be needed. Still want to keep tank level at max.
2)Just use oil line. Its all low pressure so doesn't have to be anything special
3)Tank can go on the boot floor. The pump draws the fluid through
4)Why bother. Do away with the mechanical pump and fit a electric 106 pump in the boot. Much easier.

How does the electric pump work then? Does it just replace the pump on the engine? Nothing need to be done to the steering rack or anything?

Yep exactly that. The rack has a pressure relief valve in to compensate for the variation in pump pressure with rpm. It this obviously doesn't matter with the electric pump.
You could also turn it off when you wanted for hard man driving or if you was clever, work out a way so it only works below a certain speed. That wouldnt be too difficult.

Argh like that stupid city mode on Puntos. I guess it would give slight benefits with the engine running one less thing? What do people who have done this do regarding belts?

If you have a rallye setup instead of the Ac compressor, you just need a small belt for the alternator. Just measure the length of belt needed and buy one that length.

Have been looking at the electro pumps on eBay. Good idea but they seem very pricey for what they are?

Will fuel hose fit the bill though? As I want to be a whore and get braided stuff...

Obviously more fluid will be needed, perhaps I phrases the question wrong... Will I still be going by the original max and min marks on the reservoir?

Still want to go by the original min max levels. The reason there where they are is so when you soank it round the corner, it doesn't suck air in and you loose steering temporarily (as you know, this isn't too fun....)

Could try bridges for a pump?
Doubt you will find fuel line big enough tbh. Iirc the smaller of the two lines into the tank is about 15mm ID. Just buy standard hydraulic hose and some braided covering.

Kris did this on dumdums old hdi. Ask him about the 106 electric pumps.

I might be heading to bridges on Friday with kris.

Yeah cheers diggers, I am half way through removing my aircon. Only got the compressor left. Will give that a go. Would be rude not to get a lightened pulley whilst there too ninja

Another question, to save starting a new thread...

Without taking it to silly measures (i.e. kilometers long) the abs pipes for the brakes dont have an 'unsafe length'. As in they can be extended comfortably?

Don't put the e-pas pump in the boot, otherwise you'll have a HP hose running the length of the car, which will cost a fortune...

TBH a normal pas pump is just as efficient as a e-pas pump, also the whole thing of turning it off doesn't work, when you have fluid in the rack, you turn the rack into a big pump yourself, so you end up pumping the fluid by hand, which makes it rediculously stiff and unresponsive, you really shouldn't drive a car with PAS with it turned off... You could move the normal reservoir though, just have to make sure it's higher than the level of the PAS pump, or it won't bleed correctly...

The electric PAS conversion off a 106 is actually pretty easy.

If you mount the pump where the top of the washer bottle is then you can use the standard high and low pressure pipes (though you need to bend the HP a little)

Your steering will be a little heavier than standard though.

Oh and it really does resonate through the car unless your clever with the rubbers.

Personally I want to work out how to get rid of the PAS cooler from the front cross member.

Oh and I may be going electric PAS again myself.

Thanks Ruan.

When you say the original reservoir can be relocated, do you mean to the boot? What about the HP hose being the length of the car? Or does the HP hose not run to the reservoir?
