K14
#1
After blowing the T2, i set about fitting a K14. It's from a Xantia DHY, that has been lying around for fk knows how long.

Anyway, the K14 is impossible to turn by hand. It can be turned using a spanner though, but is still tight as hell! NO play what so ever laterally or in/out (end float). Fitted it partially onto the car - just connected it and exhaust manifold and have left off the inlet manifold to start up the car and to check if it spins up at all. NOTHING, doesn't spin up even when rev'd Sad

The t2/gt15 used to flow shit loads of air on idle. I can't connect up the inlet manifold yet because i don't have the correct piping available to connect the turbo to the intercooler (The Xantia K14 has a flange for the cold side exit)...

Should i just leave mine idling for a while to see if it frees up with use?? Seems the logical thing to do even if it smokes out my garage..

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news and all but it sounds like it is fecked, it should spin really freely, if you can't turn it by hand then the bearings are totally shot..............

Time for another replacement turbo mate sorry.........

I still can't believe however that it got all the way onto the car before you noticed this Confusedhock:

Normally the first thing I do without thinking if I have a turbo in my hands is spin the shaft lol

Of course i spun the shaft...

Anway, It does not take long to put on a few manifold bolts to hook the turbo up. This way, I could satisfy myself it was fked before bining it.

I know how long it takes to fit a turbo

but if it doesn't spin by hand its pretty obvious that it is fecked no?!

Whats with the rolling eyes?

I've only fitted the exhaust manifold/lines. I thought it was fked as it didn't spin. Asked on theywhoshallnotbenamed, was then informed by a few that it may free up with use and considering Darrens probs come accross quite a few k14's, i thought it was worth 30mins of effort to see. You may not have bothered (and probs right to do so), i did.

What this thread that only 2 people have replied to?

there is no point in lying about it lol

You seriously need to chill a bit mate! I'm only trying to help, as Matt said in the above thread, if you can't turn it by hand then what chance do the exhaust gasses have?

Ahhhh..............but still, advice from Gasgasrob.........ROFL

I don't think by tight Darren would have ment "unable to turn by hand though" as how are the exhaust gasses supposed to turn it to free it up?

Haah, i'm not too clued up about gasgasrob Mark? But i suppose you're right about that bud. I just hoped Darren meant it would free up if its been sat for a while by ragin it.

I got the engine it came off. So can't be a lube failure. Seems fine but could have sat for aaages. Either way, back to gt15 it is, cheers guys.

I'd beg to differ that it's a duff turbo.

The oil oil that would of been sat in the turbo from when the last car would of mainly drained away. I think you should make sure there's nice fresh oil in the turbo, and turn it by hand and see if it free's up after a while. They usually become stiff when they've sat.

When you fit a turbo you're also supposed to crank the engine over for two 30 second blasts to prime up the oil lines and get oil flowing through the turbo before first use.

I've managed to get a ratchet on the shaft, and it's become much easier to spin. Would assume that's because the bearings been allowed to soak in oil.

Going to see if it frees up anymore tomorrow, if it does then might just take a punt Smile

I would see what happens then, Its a mare of a job when its all back together and I wouldn't be able to trust it if it had been seized up!

I didn't get chance to look for turbo's last night, will do it tonight as I will be in workshop for a bit Smile

Kl, cheers Mark.

Checked again this morn, and it's free'd it self to the point where i can just about spin the shaft with my finger yanking up on the blade Smile

I think the bearings just coked in all old oil. My gt15 doesn't look healthy at all so i reckon that'd shit itself and i've got fkin exams looming so no doubt it'd die just befre knowing my luck. If the k14 can last till July, i'd be happy as it's going to be retired then.

Jtrigga, my t2 was a bit tight to turn too when i put it in, now completely free when took off.

Boosting 13psi for now on the standard wastegate setting, just need to tweak the mbc and alls a go gooo! Response is similiar to the t2. SUCCESS!

De wastegate it, take it out and rag the tits off it then stand and laugh hysterically at your engine running away as the shaft snaps and the engine feeds on its own oil... muhahahahahahaha

My de-wastegated t2 was going ok for 2months at 28psi. I then adjusted the max throttle arm stop to get it to 30psi... shat itself later that day lol

Driving it on standardish power yesterday was shocking! Can't believe the difference all my tweaking has made. fkin love the Dturb!

I shall be cooking the k14 upto 30psi later today

Depends on how you drive it and the egts generated. I'm on the motorway quite often hiting wot/ full boost for long periods so i don't think this ones going to last long either.

Mine lasted a almost a year at 24 psi then cranked it up to well over 30psi lasted about 3 days of hard driving and shot itself out the exhaust.

At those PSIs I would be more worried about blowing the gasket or chucking a rod rather than the turbo blowing, which is a relatively small thing in comparison to either of those events.
