Really stuck with new car choices...
#1
Okay so now im broken and have nothing to do, I thought id work on getting the Bora shifted ASAP so I can get myself a new car ready for when I can drive again, which will probably be about 4 weeks time. The Bora is now on ebay/pistonheads/VAG forums and im hoping to get close to £3k for it, and im looking to spend all of that on the new car, so;

Budget - £3000 max
Criteria - Doesnt have to be all of these, but I would like a good combination of them;
RWD
Petrol
Jap/German
Convertible
Preferably around 2000 reg, although im being tempted by older stuff
Sub £2500 on insurance, ideally around £2000
'Nippy' would be good, sub 10 seconds 0-60 is essential but it doesnt need to be overly fast, just fun to drive.

My current shortlist looks like this....

Mazda MX5 NB2

1.6 or 1.8 not fussed, ticks most of the boxes but is on the steeper end of insurance with the 1.6 being £2200 and the 1.8 being £2600

Toyota Celica

1.8 140bhp version, but its FWD and not convertible so that removes alot of the interesting and fun factor. However it is better on insurance at £2100

Hyundai Coupe

2.0 140bhp, very similar to the Celia really, FWD, not convertible, but cheaper insurance

And among them I have also considered the following:

E36 BMW 320/323 - both are around £2400 on insurance
Toyota MR2 - way to much on insurance, like £3200
E30 BMW 320 convertible - £2500 insurance and much older
Mercedes W123 - Properly old skool cool, and insurance is only £1100 for a 2.8L petrol but it wont be at all 'fun' to drive, just cool haha

But im really quite stuck with what to go for. I think an MX5 is the best all rounder but im certainly tempted by alot of other less practical/more expensive cars lol Also, bear in mind this car will not be used daily as I cycle to work, so its purely for social driving and weekend fun....

HELP Sad

Thanks, Dan.

Another vote for the MX5. Having drove both a mk1 and mk2, I'd say the mk1 drives better tbh. Mk2's are still nice though!

He said rwd you fucktard. Tongue (Loving the lack of swear-filter! lol )

As others have said, forget the hyundai. Have you considered kit cars at all? Westfield, lotus, tiger etc... Or s2000, cappucino and any of the sx range....

No idea what the insurance would be like on those though and some aren't offered in convertible format, don't know exactly where your priorities lie... Also, bear in mind you can get restricted mileage insurance for considerably less, which - if you're only going to driving at weekends - won't be a problem for you.

Can't believe your even considering paying that much insurance on ANY car!!!!

I can get insured on some very expensive and exotic machinery for less than that!!!

Crazy money

You could probably get the E30 cheaper on classic insurance. I've been look at E28 525's and they're £1600-ish on classic compared to £2500 on normal.

Insurance is something I cant help, im 19 and quite stupidly have 8 points on my license and only 2 years NCB.

At £2000 per year im looking at about £180 per month, which given my financial situation, good pay and very little outgoings, is fairly affordable. And at the end of the day, if I can afford to insure a fun car then I will, im not going to just give up driving or buy a 106 NAD just because its cheaper! Smile

Thats a shame...I know of a nice one for sale. Confused

Seriously though, those insurance prices are mental, I was moaning about having to pay a grand for a modded golf......but you're looking at £2.5k!? :o I suppose if you can afford it thats fine..........but if you saved that extra money instead of spending it on insurance think of the car you could buy in a year or two! Smile

Anyway, I have nothing to add car wise really.......only convertible I like is the S2000, and I've never driven anything RWD so can't comment on that side of things.

I don't like any of them really apart from the Celica which is OK. The MX-5's everyone wanted but now everyone's bored of them and has sold them. The Hyundai well, the name says it all and the Celica's abit chavvy IMO.

What you want is a diesel Merc.....

Err, no.

If you insured a normal car for two years thats already saved you £3k in insurance........

The car isn't the problem though is it, its the 8 points with only 2 years no claims!
