On a 19991.6, is the dipstick tube a push fit or something more complex, and does the oil need draining before replacement? grateful for any advice to this 306 newbie

Yes it's a push fit, no the oil doesn't need draining before removing the tube.
the tube might be in 2 halves, there's a few types on the 1.6 engine. So once you've got the bolts off that secure it to the head, it should just be a case of pulling it up. some of them are tight, but most fall out because the O rings have perished.
