Looks like theres a lot of drum lovers on here, I can't stand the things!

Had nothing but trouble with them on every car I've bought with them! First 306 the cylinder leaked and I didn't know as the fluid stayed in the drum. 3rd 306 the shoes fell apart and locked the drum solid (had to be recovered home, tried to avoid drums ever since). Handbrake didn't hold on the 106 due to poor adjustment. 206 failed MOT on drums binding, somehow they'd overajusted, ended up ruining the wheel bearing removing them. 1.4 Fiesta failed MOT on drum imbalance. Focus drums keep sticking on and binding, and I'm sure they fade quicker than any previous but maybe that's the tiny front discs as well lol. Best one was my sisters corsa drums though, she put the handbrake on the rain and both drums stuck...I managed to drive it round the block with both drums seized before admitting defeat and jacking it up etc.

I once had a slightly binding caliper on the Golf... Erm...yeah, that's the extent of my discs rear problems!!

We're all entitled to opinions though, what I said in the last post, and indeed this one, is my experience, that doesn't make it bullshit.

What Matt said was bullshit was indeed bullshit.

They dont lock on all the time, unless theyre neglected or theyve been installed by a clot that doesnt know what theyre doing. Similarly a neglected adjuster will fail on you but if theyre greased and looked after theyll last forever. The adjusters in my 360GLT are 28+ years old and are working perfectly

And handbrakes are always better with rear drums .... why do you think a lot of cars have drums within the disks? The contact area between a shoe:drum is huge compared to a pad on a disk.

I would probably agree that for a daily - Drums are better - especially on a smallish car.
One always has to remember to leave the handbrake 'off ' (in gear) if the car is not being used daily - but I would say that also 'applies' to rear discs as well

You actually might find it easier to park an estate Dave.

Alot of them like the 306, the Volvos, the subaru forester and others have an almost completely flat back end so you can judge alot better through the rear window what you are reversing into.
Also some estates (the Impreza for example) are no longer than the saloon versions of the same car.


I would say as a family car an estate is the way forward as when the girls start getting older your gonna wanna go on holiday taking bikes and stuff like that.

Have you tried parking a Focus yet Sian? The high rear window means its more luck than judgement that you don't mount the bonnet of the car behind! Reversing up to a wall is fine though tbf.

Not with a focus estate, the rear mirror is convex so it magnifys evenything behind making it impossible to judge how close you actually are.

Sorry, I meant rear window, not mirror.

And if you say get out and check that would be fine if the focus wasn't so bloody small! With the seat far enough back for me to be comfortable on the pedals and then the steering wheel all the way back so I can reach it the gap between the steering wheel and the back of the door pillar is too small for the larger gentleman to fit between.
