Refurbing wheels.

As you all know I've been refurbing my wheels. One of them I've sanded down but still left the paint on but some has come off. Where the paints come off it cleaves cracks when I filler primer it. I've sanded them back down a couple of times but it's still happening. Any ideas?

It will have to be majorly thin though.

Sounds like it's reacting... You will need to take it right down. Use etch primer too...

you need to take it right back mate. ive just done mine and its taken ages. ive lightly filed the curbing and sanded them smooth. like i said before kent, you need to take your time with the prep work and it makes the finnished product so much better.
if i was you i would primer, flatten back a few coats. or use a filler primer. just make sure your finnish colour is being applyed to a good base.
like i said before, your only round the corner so if you need help just let me know and i will pop round and give ya a hand matey.

Yeah I've just sanded the the primer as smooth as possible see how it comes out now if not theyll have to go right back. Kingy they're looking nice will look nice on the car!

did you get all the laquer off cause that can effect the finnish.

There was no lacquer on them person before didn't get that far through refurbing them .

I think what it could be is different levels as some of the old paint is still on there its breaking where the different levels are. I've sanded them as level as possible and see how's it going now. Leaving them a little bit to dry. Hopefully they'll just need a smooth an then ready for spraying. .

Well I've given it a jolly good sand and a quick light blast of primer and it hasn't cracked this time so a light sand with 800-1000 and should be ok for spraying

right that wheels is now done plent of sanding and primering and its smooth as a babys bottom
just need lacquering which ill do tomorrow maybe but noiw sanding down the last wheel so hopefully if weather holds out ill have these done this week

Thanks Gareth appreciate spraying them up for me. I've just notice a small crack on 2 of them. But I really cba to do them again. Hopefully no one will notice it. But I'm on last one till it starte raining again.
I can't wait till I get them done. Pissed off with them now

I've managed to get 2 coats of lacquer on one pair and 1 coat on the other.....I want to get about 5-7 coats on in the next few days....going to be a busy few evenings after tonight me thinks lol

how much has it cost you with all the paint paper and filler to do?

Around £70 rough guess. I get filler primer £3.50 lacquer £2.50 about 5 of each sand paper and things all come to about 20 of quid and about 6 Cans of paint from halfords. 5 anthracite and 1moonstone.
Then there's all the time it's took me.










My dad can get a set powder coated inside and out for £100. So I think next year I'll have them dove.

Ah balls, was just about to ask about this. Just bought some seriously tatty cyclones and having to deal with some epic bubbling. The moment i get close to getting the surface flat it starts flaking off in chunks. Looks like i'm taking them back down to metal then...

Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent rattle-can supplier that isn't as expensive as halfrauds?

A lot of car shops are a fiver but IMHO they don't cover as much and the paint isn't as good a match.
I get basic cans like primer, filler, lacquer, Matt and gloss black cheap but not different colours.

Go for it though it's bloody hard work and very stressful but I've enjoyed doing them and even though they are not perfect I'm well proud of them. But there going for powder next year

Sounds like the best thing to do would be to remove all the paint and start again TBH mate, you will get a better finish that way too so its not all bad news.

I like them as an online paint supplier and remember that the halfords colours are 330ml cans not 400 like those! their colour matches are pretty damn good too IMO

A can per wheel would be overkill IMO, you will use 2 maybe 3 cans to do a set of wheels at worst so its not that bad!

The finish is more dependant on the work put in by you and just make sure that you put a decent lacquer over the top to protect it/give it a deep shine

Ah fair point. That monster colors site is pretty dangerously cheap, might go for that lol.

I'll make sure i do thin coats and am diligent with the flatting then and see if i can find some decent lacquer at a good price. Thanks for that guys, appreciate it.
