do we have thread on SatNavs?
having poked around the edge of Swindon today (new estates), looking for an exchange with my trusty old Navman S80, I think I may need to update/replace it. Huh

I have a couple of old Garmin 4.5'' satnavs which work ok - I ignore what it tells me to do much of the time but it is great for the last couple of miles into a strange town.My two satnavs have lane assist and traffic info (the traffic info is handy if used in conjunction with traffic reports).
Both of our satnavs have free lifetime updates which can save quite a lot of money over the years.

I would tiger, but I have a need for precise destinations.
my current device has a file loaded for BT Site co-ordinates.
also, when 'flying' down 'B', C & 'D' class roads, I need full focus on the road (verbal guidance a must)

Google maps is good, turn on verbal updates, mine even talks through the radio if the Bluetooth is switched on..

With internet connections its AMAZING at rerouting around traffic and calculates the fastest route (based on conditions on the roads) really well..

as toseland and others have said. A decent phone with google maps. One that is sub £120 is likely to be slow and have crap gps. Wont be much help if youre out of signal though.

I do have an iPhone 4 for work use, however, places like Withington (Glocs) are cursed with that very problem of no signal. Sad

^ It does have offline maps capability, all you need to do is download the map for where you're planning on going and you don't need any data plan

There's an option in the settings for 'offline maps' you go into this and then add a location, or you can just a drag a box around the area you want, job jobbed

That's not going to be any good if you come up to a closed road or heavy traffic though?

I could do with a new sat nav tbh, mines 7 years old now and really is showing it's age. But I want one with lifetime updates and real-time traffic rather than just a newer version of what I've got, so just waiting until it completely dies atm as the ones I want won't be cheap lol.

I use my cheap and cheerful Nokia Lumia with Here Drive, I've downloaded all the maps so I use it in offline mode, works great, turn by turn voice instructions Smile

yup, settings "offline area"  I have most of the UK done for the parts with little to no signal if I am driving, think it takes up about 2gb on the phone that would otherwise not be used anyway

Garmin or T/T?
I'm liking the spec of the TT 6200, but not the price (like £320 Halfrauds)

Garmin is the one I use not sure on model number but it's the latest lorry one, wasn't cheap over 400 quid but has everything Bluetooth, voice control etc etc the main reason I went for garmin was the free lifetime updates and free lifetime traffic.

I find my TomTom slow, always popping up saying map is 1 month out of date and takes ages to calculate route etc. I've have various TomTom's over the last the 10 years they seem to be getting worse. Google maps on iPhone is really good I've started to use it more than the TT lately.

i just use HERE DRIVE maps on my old Nokia Lumia, it's free, updates and works really well, why buy a SAT NAV? Smile

My £50 Nokia has great GPS with live travel updates.

Agreed, really easy and intuitive to use. Location finding works off google maps so will find even vague shit or stuff you've spelt wrong and don't know the post code of.

Only issue with using your phone is it's now illegal to prod it while driving.

One of the advantages of using a dash top satnav is that you do not have to take your eyes off the road and 'look down',I use a 'bean bag' mounting on one car and a 'sucker' mounting on the other as it has a little pad already fitted on top of the dash  for it.
Also I do use it sometimes as a 'moving map' in aviation parlance - you can see the route ahead with a quick glance and it shows all the road names approaching  if you are navigating to an 'area' or approximate postcode.
