There's a reason why people will generally say 'stick a 6 lump in it' though, it's because people want the most power per pound (£) and generally that's the cheapest way to do it. Obviously there's the 'free' power you can get from a tune on a XUD which is again why people rave about them.
People like what they like, it's hardly surprising that a GTi6 or a well tuned derv gets more attention than a standard 1.4 LX 5 door? Bare in mind 306's are getting to the point now where it's what £5-600 for a 1.4 with average mileage, only a few hundred more will get you a car that's substantially better out of the box in most ways (A 6, HDi, XUD etc..).
That said, I can't recall personally seeing people 'hate' on the lower spec cars when someone asks a genuine question, you might get opinions you may not like but that's life unfortunately.
