What would be the symptoms of a worn out set of hydraulic lifters?

Rattling like hell normally and reduced performance due to a lack of valve lift...

nah,  PSA engines tend to go on for ages with worn lifters..

VW/VAG lumps will shit the bucket and cost you a fortune..
